Healing-Centered Art Practices

Using Creativity to Explore Identity, Cultivate Belonging, and Resist Oppression

The children’s mental health crisis is disproportionately impacting Black, LGBTQIA+, Latino, and immigrant youth (including those who belong to more than one of these communities). Schools, as a microcosm of our society, can perpetuate systemic oppression of minoritized youth - or they can be spaces of safety, support, and healing. In this session, we’ll delve into art-based practices you can use to support all students; and in particular, to affirm students whose identities, families, or communities face marginalization. This session will focus on self expression as a vehicle for exploring identity, cultivating an empowered sense of self, resisting oppression, and celebrating resilience. Come ready to reflect on the various identities you hold, and to make some art!
